“Climate Change Reality – A Hot Topic”

Guest Speakers: Robin and Marian White

Their world travels, often for months on end – from mountain and boreal forest to the equator, through tropical forests, deserts, savannahs, biodiversity hotspots, urban and rural landscapes teeming with people, and Denmark, a leader in renewable energy – were life-changing.

They are authors of the award-winning book, Wild Alberta at the Crossroads.

The Whites present right-up-to-date pictures, video, charts, tables, text, and narrative to walk the audience through the reality and science of climate change, the perverse behaviour of the denial industry, key concerns, the carbon dioxide reduction targets needed, government performance, and where we go from here.

As of 2011, they are presenters for former US vice-president Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project.

Topic:  2014 Health Accord

• Ø Health Care is a top issue of concerns for Canadians.  The 2004 Health Accord is up for renewal in 2014. 
• Ø Canadians want the federal government working with the provinces and territories on healthcare s an immediate priority for the country
• Ø The Canadian Health Coalition represents the views of over 87% of Canadians that want public solutions to Canada’s Health Care problems.

Presenter:  Ted Woynillowicz, the Council’s prairie regional representative, traveled to Ottawa to attend the Secure the Future of Medicare: A Call to Care to participate in the Canadian Health Coalition Strategy Session, the Training Session for Lobby, and the Secure the Future of Medicare Panel at the Chateau Laurier Hotel.   Individual meetings with MPs and Senators followed on the next day.

An overview of this 2-day event will be presented.  This will be followed by a discussion and a call for public participation to meet with local MPs and Senators to lobby for a new enhanced and expanded 10 year Health Accord that includes homecare, long-term care, palliative care and a comprehensive drug plan.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Little Black Lies: The War on Truth in the Battle for the Tar Sands with special guest, author Jeff Gailus

Join Jeff Gailus as he explores the intersection of two of the most salient features of the early twenty-first century: the explosion of tar sands development and the ubiquity of hogwash. The two, he posits, are companions of sorts, each engaged in a symbiotic dance that allows them both to thrive—to the detriment of our moral and social well being.

Backgrounder:  Requests for new farmer’s markets are being turned down and dozens of empty spaces in current markets are a growing trend in Canada’s breadbasket provinces.   Increasingly, Canadian’s demand for local food markets has outpaced production.  So why the bare shelves in a rich agricultural land?

Chelsea will present a case study addressing current agricultural developments taking place elsewhere that focus on attainable solutions to this problem.

The Government of Alberta has posted an online workbook available at www.landuse.alberta.ca for you to share your feedback on the South Saskatchewan Regional Advisory Council’s (RAC’s) advice on developing a regional plan for southern Alberta. We encourage you to participate in phase 2 of the regional planning process. The workbook will be available until December 19, 2011. Glen will present an update on:

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan
addresses the following areas:
• water – develop options for improving source water protection and other means to protect watershed integrity;
• economic development – examine how the region should develop, aiming for the long-term success of the agriculture, energy, forestry, tourism industries and other economic opportunities;
• conservation – identify, conserve and restore landscapes valued for their water security, ecological function and biodiversity, considering development implications;
• recreation and tourism management – improve management of recreation use on public lands, identify locations of lands with high value for recreation and tourism; and,
• human development – examine development needs and healthy community objectives and consider the impacts to aboriginal communities.

A cross-Canada CETA tour organized by the Council of Canadians and the Canadian Union of Public Employees

Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow and CUPE president Paul Moist will be speaking across the country highlighting the dangers of this proposed deal and to say that Canadian communities are not for sale.

This tour will take place prior to the critical eighth round of CETA negotiations in Brussels this July 11-15, where offers on services are likely to take place. Just this month, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he was committed to proceeding ‘full-throttle’ on CETA and on having the deal signed by January 1, 2012, just eight months from now.

The 6-city tour will go to:

• Montreal – May 24 (with CUPE Secretary-Treasurer Claude Genereux)

Canada and the European Union are negotiating a new Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) which they hope to sign by the end of this year. But it would be more accurate to call it a privatization and deregulation pact. Under CETA, large multinational corporations could take over delivery of vital public services – like water and waste disposal – whether local governments like it or not. Local governments who choose to “buy local” or to exclude for-profit European corporations from bidding on public service contracts could have their right to do so overruled by an unaccountable trade tribunal for violating CETA.

Government promises of increased trade and jobs from a deal with the EU ring hollow. Study after study show this deal will be bad for Canadian farmers and workers, and expensive for provincial health care systems.

CETA will put a freeze on climate change and environmental policy, and it threatens public water systems in Canada with rules that will increase privatization of public services.

Public awareness of CETA is slowly growing, but it’s time to increase the pressure on the federal, provincial and territorial governments to put a stop to the negotiations and hold a public debate now.
